Cirque du Soleil has partnered with The Macallan for the launch of two editions in its Harmony Collection. To mark The Macallan’s 200th anniversary, the distillery has released two expressions: Harmony Vibrant Oak and Harmony Guardian Oak.
Several different types of oak barrels were used in the maturation of Harmony Vibrant Oak, whereas Guardian Oak was primarily matured in European second-fill barrels after being filled with American first-fill barrels. In these two whiskies, the main differences between wood types are revealed, as well as how oak and its origins play a significant role in flavor development.
With a 44.2% alcohol content, Vibrant Oak presents aromas of vanilla, lime, sweet oak, apple, toasted almonds, vanilla bean, sweet sherbet, and lime zest on the nose, with lingering vanilla on the finish. A calm sweetness is also registered on the palate.

However, the Guardian Oak has 44.2% ABV, and delivers dates, oranges, rich oak, raisins, and a blend of baking spices; sweet ginger and orange zest lead to opulent glazed dates on the palate, while nutmeg and cocoa aromas are present on the nose.
Diane Stuart, whisky maker at The Macallan said: “Vibrant Oak and Guardian Oak provided an opportunity to select the casks that deliver the classic characteristics of our two key wood types, Sherry-seasoned American oak and Sherry-seasoned European oak casks, showcasing the differences these wood types deliver.”
In addition, each cask is handcrafted to precise specifications over the course of five years, ensuring the best quality, aroma, and flavor. A cask accounts for more than 80% of the whisky’s flavor.
As part of its Harmony series, The Macallan has released the fourth edition of the series, marking the brand’s history with oak. The brand recently found a fourth Sherry cask partnership, ensuring the brand has a steady supply of oak barrels from Europe.
