The English Distillery has rolled out its first modern blended whisky, continuing its record and historic making feats. Dubbed Cask 001 whisky, only 60 bottles of the spirit have been released at an exorbitant price.
The new distillery has released the expression in honor of its eighteenth anniversary celebrations. The company has been teasing the release at various functions, including the 2024 World Whiskies Awards.
In 2006, the company opened in Norfolk, where it started off its history-making trend. The English Distillery became the first whisky company to register in England in 100 years. Thus putting an end to the absence of new registered beverage companies.
English Distillery Releases Cask 001 Whisky
However, the distillery had no plans to stop. It continued its record-setting stride by filling its first modern cask at the same time it opened shop. The founder, James Nelstrop, got to work with master distiller Iain Henderson to hand-cask the blend.
According to the Whiskey Wash, the whisky was transferred once to a sherry cask before returning to its original American Standard Barrel, where it remained undisturbed.
Founder Nelstrop believes that the new spirit is beyond whisky. His son seems to share the same belief.
“There’s whisky, and then there’s Cask 001,” says Andrew Nelstrop, Chairman of The English Distillery and son of the founder. “This isn’t just a remarkable spirit, it’s a historical artifact. My father built this distillery from a dream, and this cask is where it all began.”
A recent press release describes the quality of the new whisky.
The whisky is bottled at natural cask strength of 54.2% ABV without chill-filtration or added coloring. Official tasting notes describe initial aromas of vanilla, red fruit, and sandalwood, evolving to crème brûlée and fresh strawberries. The palate reveals rich caramel with oak and stewed apples, finishing with what the distillery describes as “a lovely long finish.”
