Laws Whiskey House, based in Denver, has unveiled its limited-edition Headwaters Series Four Grain Bourbon. They’re aiming to raise awareness and support for Colorado’s rivers through education and charitable donations.
The Headwaters Series highlights the importance of water conservation in the West. Laws Whiskey House commits ten percent of sales from this collection to Colorado’s leading water conservation programs.
Headwaters Series Four Grain Bourbon
The first release in the series focuses on the Colorado River. This body of water is the most endangered river system in the US, as identified by American Rivers. This special bourbon is crafted from high-quality corn, heirloom wheat, barley, and rye sourced from family-owned farms in Colorado. Aged for three years in charred oak barrels and influenced by Denver’s high-altitude climate, the bourbon is proofed to 50% alc/vol with water from the Colorado River’s headwaters. The resulting bourbon offers flavors of orange peel, cinnamon, vanilla custard, sweet tobacco, and spice with a rich, dry finish.
Al Laws, founder of Laws Whiskey House, states, “We’re conserving Colorado’s rivers for future generations by implementing efficient systems and industry-leading wastewater recycling at our distillery. However, we can’t save Colorado’s rivers alone. The Headwaters Series aims to highlight that Colorado’s eight major river basins supply water to millions and need our help.”
The Role of Water in Whiskey Production
Water is essential in whiskey production, from mashing and cooking grain to proofing and preparing the final abv. As a Colorado-based distillery leading the state’s sustainability efforts in water, energy, and resource conservation, Laws Whiskey House created the Headwaters Series to give back to the rivers integral to their production. The Colorado River, flowing nearly 1,500 miles from Colorado’s Rocky Mountains to Mexico’s Sea of Cortez, provides drinking water to 40 million people. It also supports a $1.4 trillion agricultural and recreational economy, as noted by American Rivers.
Supporting Water Conservation
Ten percent of sales from the Headwaters Series Four Grain Bourbon will support the Shoshone Water Right Preservation. The organization is dedicated to protecting the largest and most senior non-consumptive water right on the Colorado River.
