I think one of the major hurdles for novice wine drinkers is their phobia of appearing uneducated about wine and being embarrassed. So often people ask me about wine (they assume because I am married to Simon that when he put the ring on my finger he passed along his vast knowledge...I wish!) and when I suggest they stop into the The Merch the balk at the idea b/c they presuppose it is a 'fancy' wine store and would feel overwhelmed. I love telling folks about the staff at the Wine Merchant....how genuine they are and how willing they are to help a novice navigate the giant world of wine. And they are so surprised that you can get an AMAZING wine for around 10 bucks!!! So many misconceptions about wine, what makes good wine and how much you should pay for it. Wine is good if you like the way it tastes. I am still a novice at the wine thing...it's been 3 years for me and just recently I've noticed growth in my appreciation, my palate and my ability to recount previously tasted wines.

So, to make a long story short (wink)....I completely agree with you post.

I shope at K&L here in San Francisco and agree that "even with the $20 limit, it would be too easy to get three really good wines". That is why I always tell friends that buy at the grocery stores that they better do it at Trader Joe's so they aren't wasting quite as much money on the crapshoot!

I have never denied self-abuse. :-) What I should have made more plain is both the joking nature of the 20 Buck Luck exercise, and my thoughts on the proper way to approach learning about wine.
